The radioactive cloud arose, according to estimates of European experts, in Russia, between the Volga and the Ural mountains. It is possible that the source of radiation was located in Kazakhstan.

Leakage of nuclear material, according to scientists, would require the evacuation or protection of the local population within a few kilometers from the emission source.

From September 29 in such countries of Western and Central Europe, like Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France, in the atmosphere there was an increase in levels of the isotope ruthenium-106. The Federal office for radiation protection (Germany) noted that it does not threaten human health.

Ruthenium-106 is used for radiation therapy, in particular in the treatment of tumors of the eye, the isotope is also used in fuel cells for satellites.
