Russia began to build in Syria naval base

Now the preparatory work for the modernization of the port becomes in practice

Russia began to modernize the Syrian port of Tartus, where it will be placed on a permanent basis, the naval base of the Russian Federation. This was stated by the head of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security Viktor Ozerov.

Noted that now the preparatory work for the modernization of the port “becomes in practice”. “Despite the fact that the agreement in Tartus is not yet introduced in the State Duma, the text of his acts from the moment of signing”, – said Ozerov. We will remind, Russia and Syria signed an agreement on the deployment of naval fleet in the port of Tartus for a period of 49 years in January 2017.

About the plans of Russia to place in the Tartus naval base, which will operate on a permanent basis, said in October 2016, state Secretary – Deputy defense Minister Nikolai Pankov.
