Russia will be forced to build defensive zone.
Possible accession of Ukraine and Georgia in NATO would force Russia to build defensive zone in Sochi. This was stated by Director of the European cooperation Department of Russian foreign Ministry Andrey Kelin.
“For us it will be a huge military and economic problem. We have to build a defensive belt near our current third capital – Sochi. We will have to spend enormous resources to prevent possible actions of a potential enemy. It’s inevitable,” said Kelin.
The diplomat noted that in this scenario Russia “will have to build on the border with Ukraine defensive echelons”. “And to translate the spearhead of our defensive constructions to the South regarding Ukraine,” said Kelin.
According to him, “the situation dictates” that the entry of Ukraine and Georgia to NATO could happen in the near future.
“But if the relationship will run if our Western partners and the call will go the way of forcing further confrontation, of course, this can happen without a doubt. And we’re going to have to prepare very seriously”, – said Kelin.
