Countries have discussed the situation with the detained former military
The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov discussed in a telephone conversation with his Austrian colleague Karin Kneissl bilateral relations after the arrest of a retired Austrian military on charges of espionage in favor of Russia. This was reported on the website of the Russian foreign Ministry on Saturday, November 10.
As noted in the foreign Ministry, Kneisl explained the motives in Vienna, taking decisions in the situation, and expressed hope that these steps will not affect the further development of cooperation between Austria and Russia.
Lavrov, for his part, underlined the unacceptability of “the practice of submitting unsubstantiated public accusations,” contrary to the norms of international communication. He also noted that any mutual concerns should be discussed through the established channels of dialogue and fact-based.
Earlier it became known that Austria has detained a retired Colonel of the armed forces on suspicion of gathering intelligence for Moscow. According to media reports, a former officer, now retired, during his service in the Austrian army about 20 years engaged in espionage in favor of Russia.
