The U.S. highway Route 66 is perhaps the most famous highway of America, the real “Mother road”.
She saw huge caravans of migrants from Oklahoma and neighboring States, fleeing the drought and unemployment, sneaks in the 1930s in the blessed California in search of work through the dust storms. The track flourished in the 1950s, finally went into decline 30 years later, but continues to live in American music and movies.
Highway U. S. Route 66 is better known in the U.S. as the “Main street of America” or “Mother road”. The route linking North-East and South-West of the country, begins in Chicago, Illinois and runs through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, new Mexico and Arizona to Santa Monica in California – nearly four thousand kilometers.
During the great Depression U. S. 66 became the main route by which whole families from the States of Arkansas, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma the so-called “okis” – roamed to the West, hoping to be hired by any farmer. In the late 1960s, the highway began to fall into decay: to build more highways, which is winding and not routed in an optimal way “Mother road” could no longer compete. In 1985, she was deprived of the status of the motorway.
But to die the road not given in the late 1980s came the first Association, which aims the protection of “Main street” as a historical heritage. In 1999, President bill Clinton signed a special law, in which the salvation of the road was allocated $ 10 million. The track is firmly entrenched in American culture. In honor of a popular song Get Your Kicks on Route 66, played in many movies.
The first road along the route of U.S. 66 was built in 1857: it was assumed that the loads on the desert plot will be transported on camels. Some warehouses, gas stations and hotels along the road have been converted into museums. Route U. S. 66 owe their rise many retailers, located their shops along the road.
A major us oil company Phillips 66 got its name just by the name of the highway. Officially, the highway was derived from the system of highways of the USA due to the fact that a large part of the route was duplicated high-speed modern highways.
In some States, sections of the road into the local highways with the same number – 66. In our days the highway with abandoned gas stations, shops and hotels looks like a scenery for atompunk. It is on U. S. 66 – rather, it is located on the defunct town of Radiator springs – the action of the cartoon “Cars”.
