Roborace released the first unmanned car

While global automakers are already working on autopilot systems for the masses, experts Roborace tackling a completely different task.

They seek to implement the technology in the world of Motorsport and has already managed to build a prototype unmanned car Robocar.

The prototype was presented at the exhibition Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It is worth noting that the team Roborace quite fast progress in the creation of unmanned car. Last year the company could boast only a concept and graphic images of the car.

In the picture concept looked impressive, so the specialists Roborace appeared a difficult task – to embody the idea into reality, without making radical changes to the design.

“The challenge for our engineers was to change as little as possible”, — said the head of Roborace Denis Sverdlov.

For example, the company’s engineers could not afford to be placed on the roof of the car, a lidar device (for information about remote objects) and they had to break your head over where to install this component.

However, the format of the UAV meant certain advantages. Car Robocar doesn’t need the cockpit or the security system for riders. Consequently, the disposal of specialists Roborace was more space.

Whatever it was, and the company coped with the task. Robocar has about 5 meters long and 2 meters wide. The weight of the racing car is 975 kg. It is equipped with four electric motors with a capacity of 300 kilowatts and is capable of speeds up to 320 km/h.

Roborace planned to release his creation on the track before the MWC, but did not manage to implement his plan. The company is going to do it later, but the exact timing has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, she conducts demonstration races prototypes DevBots before the races of Formula E. DevBots also able to move independently, but in them is a cockpit for the engineer who can take control if necessary.

In the future, Roborace sees the creation of a racing series in which “Robocar” will compete with each other. Drones in the race all the cars are identical from a technical point of view. It will be rather competitions software autopilots, and the winners will be the teams with the most efficient systems.

Perhaps not all fans of racing these competitions will appeal, because they will not allow you to enjoy the skill of professional riders. However, Roborace may contribute to the development of technology Autonomous movement in General. After all, the creators of unmanned cars will have to create system of the autopilot, is able to maneuver and interact with other cars at pretty high speeds.
