Somewhere in the distant Outback of California, many years ago, one girl succumbed to the entreaties of her boyfriend and decided to visit his uncle. To use three main characters, dividing the film into three quite clearly delineated “chapters”, each with its own plot, climax and denouement – a very risky appointment. To connect it all into a seamless narrative from McCarthy comes out. The history of Lee, her sister Faith and unhappy obsessed and remain separate stories, connected only event. And even the fact that all three Actresses are gorgeous, and thanks to them the characters are much more alive than it must be according to the script, does not help.
But McCarthy knows how to scare great. As a screenwriter he may be far from ideal, but as a purely “technical” horror Director is the best and does not want. McCarthy does not hesitate to use clichés, but due to the quality of formulation gives it freshness and makes you sparkle with new colors – it manages even very trite and predictable scene to make a tense and frightening to shiver. To scare the modern viewer a scene about “the monster in the mirror” is a necessary skill so advanced that it’s almost a talent. Given this installation, sustained atmosphere and a decent effects – technically, the movie was nearly flawless.
Great ideas, great horror – but contradictory and some incoherent plot and thematic uncertainty, inevitably creating a feeling that the Director did not understand what exactly he wants to say. If you just want “that was terrible”, then any claims to “At the Devils”s Door” is not and can not be. Really scary. If you want more, then better, perhaps to avoid the”At the Devil’s Door”, despite the stunning trailer and the success of the previous film McCarthy. In order to avoid disappointment.
