This is not the first visit of the President of the Russian Federation in this place.
Like last year, the Russian President visited Valaam in the day of remembrance of the founders of the Valaam monastery of St. Sergius and St. Herman.
The temple of Putin was met by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, previously arrived at the monastery and served a solemn Liturgy here.
President of Russia venerated the Holy relics of the venerable Sergius and Herman, put a candle Valaam icon of the Mother of God, and then talked to the rector of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Last year, the media reported that the company “Prime”, controlled by friends of Putin – businessmen Yuriy and Boris Kovalchuk, has a large number of sites on the shore of lake Ladoga in Karelia, near the island of Valaam.

The founders of monastic life on Valaam, Sergius and Herman were the Greek clergy, who came to the Isle in the X century along with the first Orthodox missionaries.
