Putin at the airport met the President of Syria Bashar al-Assad, defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, commander of the Russian forces in Syria, Colonel-General Sergey Surovikin.
Addressing the servicemen, Putin gave the order to begin withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria.
“The Minister of defense, chief of General staff ordered to begin the withdrawal of Russian troops to their permanent deployment”, – he said.
Putin also said that “Russia’s armed forces with the Syrian army defeated the most militant group of international terrorists.”
Note that Putin’s visit to Syria was not announced. In the Kremlin reported that on December 11 the Russian leader will visit Egypt and Turkey.
The decision on the withdrawal of most Russian forces met at the Kremlin in 2016. Russia has said it will continue to supply the Syrian government weapons and military equipment and will also train the Syrian military.
