Prisoner of everyday life: “Martin” by George Romero

“Martin” is the best George Romero movie and the unusual horror of those that I looked. No romirowsky zombie, but a vampire. Or not? Maybe just a psychopath, raping incapacitated women and drinking their blood. No mythology and mysticism: the protagonist is just a teenager, which is not no garlic, no crucifixes, no sunlight. No Gothic – the camera slowly captures many scenes of everyday life: black teenagers bully a white woman at the supermarket, bored Housewives listen to the radio, Sunday meetings of a Catholic community, family dinners and family squabbling, miserable kitchen, long shots of bridges, stations, streets.

This casual backdrop stand taken dramatic scenes of murder: short cuts, quick change and plans, many angles, bright blood. The victim does not go away. However, the protagonist is also a victim of nature, or its pathology: we always see it close-up, sandwiched between the frame borders and always in narrow confined spaces.

Martin is a prisoner of everyday life. Scenes of his everyday life are usually accompanied by asynchronous sound of talk radio, his own reflection: he seems to be not himself in this everyday life is sluggish, a bit moronic, silent. Only in the murder scenes, the sound becomes synchronous, the colors are bright, the speed of installation is high, but Martin is active and fulfilling. The leitmotif through the entire film is his phrase “no magic, no.” Vampirism is just a blood lust, and murder does not make life brighter, as it may first seem, only more painful. No romanticizing of the image of the vampire, but his deconstruction.

Romero was more of a psychological drama about a teenager growing up in a provincial town than a proper horror movie. The mystical subject is given only black-and-white accents: not the memories of the 84-year-old vampire, not the fantasy pubertantnyy boy. Very unusual film stands out sharply from the rest of the vampire movies, with one of the best endings: do not turn off the movie after the appearance of the credits, watch until the end.
