Prime Minister of Romania Sorin Grindeanu willing to resign only if Parliament will extend to him a vote of confidence. To leave his post under the pressure of the demands of protesters, he refused.
February 1, the Romanian government adopted a decree on Amnesty of corrupt officials. One of the orders provides for the removal of criminal records with sentenced to probation.
In addition, Amnesty shall be convicted on corruption-related crimes for up to five years, and single mothers of minor children.
According to one of the regulations, a government official cannot be prosecuted if the harm caused to them does not exceed the sum of 50 thousand euros.
This government initiative led to mass protests in the country – on the streets, according to Romanian media, went 300-500 thousand people.
The Cabinet of Ministers held on 5 February emergency meeting, which adopted the decision to cancel previously taken decisions about the weakening of the fight against corruption.
However, the protests did not subside. Now the protesters are demanding the resignation of the government.
