President Petro Poroshenko, vystupaya celebrations on the occasion of the Constitution Day near the monument to Pylyp Orlyk in Kiev, said he expects the Verkhovna Rada of withdrawal of parliamentary immunity.
The President stressed that the efforts of the Prosecutor General and the NAB to fight corruption rests in parliamentary immunity. And, actually, Poroshenko considers it anachronistic and ready to submit to the Verkhovna Rada its draft amendments to the Constitution. The President also noted that many candidates during the election promised voters to support the abolition of parliamentary immunity.
Poroshenko also noted that the competition in the Supreme Court is at the final stage and requires the introduction of new procedural laws and rules.
We will remind, in 2015, the Parliament was submitted a draft law №1776 with the proposal of the President about cancellation of immunity of deputies and judges. While the Constitution was supposed to be the point that MPs do not bear legal liability for voting results or statements in Parliament and its bodies, with the exception of liability for insult or defamation.
5 Feb 2015, Parliament sent the bill to the constitutional court, which last summer provided their comments. The draft in the Parliament was not considered.
