The new BMW 1 Series will get hybrid and electric options.
The upcoming 1 Series seen on the tests. The hatchback will no longer be rear-wheel-drive because it will use the UKL platform, which underpins the products of the BMW Group such as the 2 Series Active Tourer and 2 Series Gran Tourer and the range of MINI models.
Use the UKL platform should be liberating more space inside the cabin, especially the back, for passengers and for Luggage. Judging by what was seen by the photographers, it looks like the kind of top option M140i because of the double exhaust pipes, probably, all-wheel drive xDrive, which should put it on par with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R and Ford Focus RS.
It is expected that in the upcoming line of 1 Series will be presented three – and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that will be part of either front-or all-wheel-drive layout. Already included hybrid options on the platform UKL in 225xe Active Tourer and MINI Countryman, it is likely that there will be a fully electric 1 Series. Previously it was stated that the last, the upcoming compact BMW will be available only as a five-door, compared to previous versions, where there was a three-door version.
Although this is the first full replacement model of the 1 Series to FWD, it’s not the first model with front-wheel drive, as this mark is exclusive for China, the sedan 1 Series.
