American and canadian geophysicists have discovered a huge sea of frozen water hidden under the surface of Mars.
Layer consisting of water ice (50-80%), sand and gases, is at a depth of 1-10 meters below the surface in the West of the plain of Utopia, about halfway from the equator to the North pole.
Frozen pond has a thickness of 80-170 meters and a volume of 14.3 cubic kilometers.
Discover a frozen sea, scientists were able with the help of radar SHARAD (Shallow Radar) space station MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter).
Martian orbital camera MRO was launched to Mars in 2005, and in 2006-m has reached the red planet. In 2008, its main mission has come to an end, but NASA has extended the operation of the probe. In addition to shooting the planet’s surface, the unit is involved in transmitting signals to earth from the Mars Rover.
