At Google Earth was discovered “dead zone” – an area whose image has not been updated in more than eight years. As found by the journalists of the edition Motherboard, this site is a U.S. military training ground.

In order to understand how the censored card, revision Motherboard has purchased a satellite image of the area, taken in 2013. The price was almost two thousand dollars. The journalists had planned to get exclusive rights to the photo and sell it to Google for one dollar. They hoped that then a hole in the card is closed.
However, after reviewing the contract, the reporters found that they couldn’t get the rights to the image. They were offered only for rent. Lawyers have confirmed that the can be withdrawn.
To avoid problems with the authorities, the editors published only a screenshot of this picture, and told them what happened.
“We, a couple of laymen who don’t know, shows whether the image is something important for national security (and no one gave us information about it),” said the reporters.
The company buys them from various suppliers: business organizations, government organizations, academic institutions and others. “It’s Google Earth, not ours”, – concluded the journalists in its investigation.
Earlier it became known about plans of the Ministry of defence of Belgium to sue Google for failing to blur out satellite photos maps services. Moderators of the service is not covered images of important military installations, including air bases and nuclear power plants.
