No surprises: Iran re-elected the President

Hassan Rouhani won Iran’s presidential elections, gaining 57% of the vote.

The Minister of internal Affairs of Iran abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said that the results of counting 100% of the votes, Rouhani scored 57% of the vote (23 549 616).

His main rival, conservative candidate Ebrahim Raisi received 15,786 million votes (38%). The other candidates received 500 thousand votes.

Iranian state television has congratulated Rouhani on his election victory.

In 2013, Rouhani won the presidential election with a score of 51% of the votes with a turnout of 73%. This year the turnout was 70%.

Modest reforms Rouhani was given the opportunity in 2015 to conclude a nuclear agreement between Iran and world leaders that has led to the easing of international sanctions against Tehran.

68-year-old Rowhani has promised to open Iran to the world and to give its citizens more freedom. However, he was suddenly faced with a serious challenge of Raisi, who is a protégé of Supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

According to the theocratic system of the Islamic Republic, Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the authority to make final decisions on all political matters.
