Neutron star spotted a mountain

In one second the neutron star makes 600 revolutions around its axis.

Scientists from the Astronomical center of Nicolaus Copernicus in Warsaw (Poland) suggested that neutron star J1023+0038 is a mountain. A study published on the website arXiv.org.

In one second the neutron star J1023+0038 makes 600 revolutions around its axis. Because of the energy loss for every billion years, the rotation frequency of the lights should decrease to 76 revolutions per second. Conducted by scientists have observed a deviation in the behavior of J1023+0038.

It turned out that the neutron star switches between the two modes of radiation: radio and x-ray ranges. In the latter case, the rotation frequency of the J1023+0038 is reduced by 30 percent. Scientists have found the explanation of such behavior of the star.

Because J1023+0038 has a star companion, the second to the first, gradually flows matter. It is, as scientists believe, leads to the formation on the surface of the J1023+0038 bulge height of a few millimeters.

Astronomers believe that the direct way to discover the mountain on a neutron star would be possible through the analysis of its gravitational radiation.

A typical neutron star has roughly the same mass as the Sun, while its diameter is about 10-20 kilometers. The core of the star consists of neutrons, a thin crust of atomic nuclei and electrons. The gravitational collapse of a celestial body prevent nuclear force, a neutron star from other luminaries features almost perfect spherically symmetric form.
