Russia and the United States should directly negotiate the contract on liquidation of rockets, without the participation of NATO, according to the Alliance.
The Alliance stands ready to support the dialogue with Russia on all issues, including the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range. This was stated on Thursday, January 10, assistant Secretary General of NATO for political Affairs and security policy Alejandro Alvargonzalez.
“The INF Treaty – it is more a question of the US and Russia, but of course it affects European security. USA advise European countries on this topic. We must continue the dialogue in a format of Council Russia – the NATO and other forums on all issues including on the subject of the INF Treaty”, he said.
Alvargonzalez noted that NATO “is not part of the discussions between Russia and the United States on this issue and a party to the negotiations.” “Russia should talk about the willingness to negotiate not through the media but directly with the United States,” he said.
He added that a new meeting of the Council Russia – NATO will take place soon.
“NATO is always ready to support the dialogue with Russia on various issues. The meeting of the NATO Council – Russia must soon take place”, – he said, without specifying the timeframe.
The last meeting of the Council Russia – NATO at the level of ambassadors was held on 31 October 2018 in Brussels.
