Ukraine and Georgia are not yet ready to become new members of NATO, but the Alliance is with them relevant work. This was stated by the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Halifax Forum on international security in the canadian Halifax.
“In order to become a member of NATO needs to comply with the standards of the organization. Ukraine and Georgia until reformed properly, they need to modernize defence institutions to fight corruption and to strengthen democratic institutions,” he said.
Jens Stoltenberg also said that the Alliance “helps them in this process.”
“NATO’s doors are open and the best proof of that since the end of the cold war, the number of Alliance members has almost doubled. Montenegro became the 29th member of NATO this year,” he said.
We will remind that the Forum is held in the canadian city of Halifax (Nova Scotia) in 2009. Traditionally, it is attended by representatives of the defense ministries of NATO countries and other invited guests. The forum will end on November 19.
Earlier it was reported that Turkey withdraws its troops from NATO because of the scandal with Norway.
We also wrote that NATO is dissatisfied with the pace of military reforms in Ukraine.
