Rasmussen urged the West to provide Ukraine with modern weapons and to enter the peacekeeping contingent to the East of the country.
Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen urged the Western countries to provide Ukraine with modern defensive weapons and place along the border with the Russian UN peacekeepers. He wrote about this in an article for the leading canadian publication “the Globe and Mail”.
In his opinion, this will help to stop the bloodshed in the Donbass.
“Europe, Canada and the United States now have the opportunity to contribute to the political resolution of this war: first, by providing the Ukrainian military defense equipment and, second, by deploying powerful in the Donbass UN peacekeeping mission,” explained Rasmussen.
According to him, arming Ukraine will serve as a whip, and the lifting of Russia sanctions – the carrot.
“If Russia withdraws its troops and restore Ukraine’s sovereignty, we are able to offer the biggest reward – relief of the sanctions regime. This dish is not served by parts: a complete lifting of sanctions is possible only after the full implementation by Russia of its obligations”, – said the former Secretary General of NATO.
