NATO has not received requests for membership from Ukraine.
NATO is informed about the decision of the Verkhovna Rada to fix on the legislative level of Ukraine’s course for NATO membership, but have not yet received formal applications for membership from the Ukrainian government. About it reports Interfax-Ukraine with reference to the Director of the center for information and documentation of NATO Barbara Malenkovu.
“When it comes to the decision taken by the Verkhovna Rada on amendments and additions to the guidelines of Ukrainian foreign policy, including Ukraine’s membership in NATO, we were informed about this decision. At the same time, NATO has not yet received formal application for membership in the Alliance from the Ukrainian government,” said Marenkova on a press-conferences on Friday in Kiev, commenting on the relevant decision of the Verkhovna Rada and all Ukraine’s chances for NATO membership.
She noted that currently implementation of the decisions of the Warsaw summit of NATO on the concentration on the reform process of the defence sector and the implementation of the Strategic defence Bulletin 2020 as a priority direction for Ukraine and NATO.
“It is our priority to work. And when talking about future development, of course, we need to see (officially assigned to the position – if) and make the decision,” added Marenkova.
