Diets with high protein content are particularly useful
Instead of counting calories, people who want to stay slim, you can just give preference to products rich in protein such as fish, eggs and meat, scientists say.
Over the past 60 years the proportion of protein in Western type of food has fallen dramatically, estimated by researchers that may explain the steady increase in the number of people with obesity.
“We can use this information to help people manage their weight and prevent obesity, through ensuring a sufficient level of protein,” said Professor David Raubenheimer from the University of Sydney.
Professor Raubenheimer and his colleagues presented their findings today at the annual meeting of the Society for experimental biology in Manchester and explained why diets high in protein, such as Atkins, are really effective.
The authors warned that these diets can cause health problems, as it upsets the balance of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. This ratio should be correct.
Besides the fact that the protein is a good source of energy, it is important for healthy growth and repair of body tissues such as muscles, including the heart, internal organs and skin.
