Experts believe that sugar used by cancer cells contributes to the rapid growth and spread of the tumor
Scientists of the Flemish Institute of biotechnology has published the results of his research, which has shown that sugar stimulates the growth and reproduction of cancer cells.
During long-term studies they found that high consumption of sugar by cancer cells promotes tumor growth. During the experiment, the scientists used yeast, which contain proteins in cancer cells. The fact that cancer cells mainly feed on glucose, if they get much sugar, it starts the growth cycle.
It is noted that unlike healthy cells cancer produce the major part of energy from the breakdown of glucose. This phenomenon triggers a cycle of continuous stimulation of development and growth of cancer.
“We have seen in the example of the yeast that using fructose-1,6-diphosphate was activation of proteins that stimulate reproduction as yeast and malignant cells,” said one of the study’s authors Professor Johan Thevelein.
Scientists believe that a relationship will help including in the preparation of individual diets for cancer patients.
