For the title in the Spanish capital, Nadal competed with Dominique Tim, who two weeks ago beat in the final in Barcelona. In that match, Tim took only five games – in Madrid, the Austrian had made the right outputs and had a favorite a serious rebuff.
The first set lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes. Tim led to a break 3:1, then lost his serve. In the tenth game Dominic on his serve played a triple set-bol, but twice at the tiebreak was one ball away from winning the set but failed to use his chances.
