Mother of ex-President of Georgia, former head of the Odessa regional administration and the leader of Ukrainian opposition party “movement new forces,” Saakashvili Giuli Alasania believes that her son was arrested in Kiev illegal.
“His arrest is absolutely illegal,” – said on Saturday Georgian media statement by G. Alasania, who notes that the Ukrainian authorities “also have a claim” to be democratic and strive in the European Union.
According to her, she is ready to come to Ukraine only if necessary and requested. “On his own initiative I’m not going to interfere. As required by the business, and will do,” she said.
Commenting on the state of health of Mikhail Saakashvili, Alasania said that she had little information and she knows only that he has a terrible cold. However, she did not rule out that Saakashvili may be pneumonia.
Earlier on Saturday, how to write the Georgian media, Saakashvili’s wife Sandra Roelofs stated that he considers the detention of her husband in Kiev “politically motivated”.
“He was threatened with the moment about a year ago he joined the opposition. Despite these threats, he still decided to return from Poland to Ukraine and continue the fight” – media quoted the wife of the former President of Georgia.
S., Roelofs believes that the purpose of the Ukrainian authorities is to force Saakashvili to shut up. “It won’t work. Ukrainians with international support certainly confirm that such treatment of political opponents is unacceptable and illegal,” she said.
As reported, Saakashvili, was detained late on Friday evening, December 8. The incriminated part 2 of article 256 of the Penal code (promotion of members of the criminal organizations and concealment of their criminal activity) provides from 5 to 10 years of imprisonment.
Presently, Saakashvili is in the temporary detention center of the security Service of Ukraine in Kiev.
The court must elect the measure of restraint for 72 hours.
In the detention center Mikhail Saakashvili declared a hunger strike.
