EU advised Russia and Ukraine to be “very reserved”.
The head of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini said that the incident with the participation of Russia in the Kerch Strait was a violation of the General principles of the OSCE and called on Russia to release Ukrainian sailors.
“Recent developments in the Azov sea are cause for great concern and are yet another case when our principles are violated”, – said Mogherini, speaking at the Council of foreign Ministers of the OSCE in Milan.
Mogherini also called for de-escalation of the situation.
“We urge all parties to show utmost restraint, to achieve a rapid de-escalation. And we call on Russia to release detained ships, their crew and equipment without conditions and without delay,” – said the diplomat.
Mogherini added that the EU remains committed to a sustainable political solution of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
“We continue to call for full implementation of the Minsk agreements by all parties, and we have made clear that the so-called elections outside the control of the government of the territories in Eastern Ukraine are illegal and undermine the commitments made under the Minsk agreements,” she said.
