Microsoft reported hackers on sports and anti-doping organizations

Microsoft has fixed a cyber attack by hackers on anti-doping and sports organizations around the world. As reported on the website of Microsoft, these attacks committed by the group of Strontium, also known as Fancy Bear/APT28. Previously this group has been accused of ties to Russian authorities.

In total, the attacks that started on September 16, has undergone no less than 16 national and international sporting and anti-doping organizations on three continents. This happened before the news about possible new actions by the world anti-doping Agency (WADA), write “Vedomosti”. Thus, according to experts, success was crowned only a small portion of attacks.

“We believe it is important to disseminate information about the new round of similar activities, when the world is in anticipation of the summer Olympic games 2020 in Tokyo” – it is told in message Microsoft.

This is not the first such attack Strontium in sport organizations: a similar incident was recorded in 2016 and 2018, when the hackers gained access to emails of sports organizations, including WADA and anti-doping officials. This time, according to the Corporation, hackers use the same tools and techniques to government and military agencies, think tanks, law firms, human rights organizations, financial institutions and universities around the world, RBC.

In the fall of 2018, the U.S. justice Department has indicted seven Russian military Chief Directorate (GU, former GRU) of the General staff of the armed forces in harmful cyberdeterrence against the U.S. and its allies. They, in particular, was blamed for attacks on American and international anti-doping agencies and sports federations. The U.S. justice Department argued that a portion of the obtained data, the GRU published on behalf of the group Fancy Bear.

According to special services of the USA and the UK, employees of GU of staff are behind the hacking groups Fancy Bear, Voodoo Bear Sofacy, Pawnstorm, Sednit, CyberCaliphate, Cyber Berkut, BlackEnergy Actors, Tsar Team and Sandworm. These groups associated with the attacks that occurred worldwide from 2015 to 2018. Among other things we are talking about hacking servers of the National Committee of the US Democratic party during the presidential campaign of 2016, and also about the epidemic of computer virus BadRabbit in October 2017.
