Mercedes has patented a new airbag for pedestrians. They are embedded in the a-pillars.
The system uses squibs, which lifts up and slides back the hood, closing the lower part of the windshield and wiper. Themselves the airbags deploy along the a-pillars.
“Cushions” placed on the racks, is also patented and Porsche. However, they are not used for pedestrian protection, as “Mercedes”, and from the side of the cabin to protect the driver in cases when the head during a collision can slide off the front pads, drop down on the wheel.
Pillow rack Porsche plans to use on the car.
First cushion to protect pedestrians made by Volvo. In 2012, she appeared on model V40. Cushion covered almost the entire windshield and a-pillars. A year later the manufacturer said it was ready to abandon this pillow because of the high cost of the technology.
Now the airbag for pedestrians is the Subaru Impreza (pradva, only in the Japanese market), Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar E-Pace.
