Mercedes-Benz Buses began production of a hybrid version of the Citaro bus.
The first five units have already been handed over to the transport network of the Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen AG – they will carry passengers on intercity routes Stuttgart.
At the end of 2018, the hybrids will be transferred to the new Express service X1 which will operate only buses with innovative powertrains and low emissions.
Mercedes Citaro hybrid between diesel engine and automatic transmission is installed disc-shaped electric motor 14 kW (19 HP) and 220 Nm.
Under braking it acts as a generator, recuperarea energy, which may briefly be stored in capacitors (mild hybrid storage, MHS). When overclocking this electricity is supplied to the electric motor which helps the internal combustion engine, creating additional thrust.
A simple 48-volt circuit without a full battery reduces fuel consumption by 8.5% and also saves the resource of the engine and the brakes.
Serving “mild” hybrid like a normal Citaro, without needing any additional operations.
