These lights are very similar to the auroras on Earth, but, strictly speaking, are not fully.
“Mars has no strong magnetic field, causing the particle emissions are absorbed by its atmosphere, which warms it and causes to expand. So there is no concentrated auroras near the polar regions,” says Sonal Jain from the University of Colorado at boulder (USA).
