The famous “Azure window” – a limestone rock in the form of an arch with height of 28 meters to the West of the Maltese Islands of Gozo collapsed after heavy storms.
The rock was one of the world heritage of UNESCO.
The Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat said that it was “heartbreaking” news.
As writes the local edition of Times of Malta, a study conducted in 2013 showed that although the Azure window will inevitably eroded, he still was in no danger of immediate destruction.
However, as wrote in his “Twitter” Prime Minister Muscat, in recent years, there have been reports that the world-famous landmark still suffered greatly from erosion.
“This sad day has come,” he added.
Popular among tourists the arch, located at the shore of the island of Gozo, can be seen in the first episode of the series “Game of thrones” and in several movies.
Local authorities recently installed signs prohibiting approach to the rock, but these warnings were ignored.
Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis acknowledged that “Azure window” played a significant role in attracting tourists, however, expressed confidence that the tourism business on the island will be able to survive this blow.
