An international group of paleontologists from Italy and France found in Madagascar the remains of an ancient reptile that lived 165 million years ago. Reptile who’s a relative of crocodiles and named Razanandrongobe sakalavae, hunting the dinosaurs and could even cope with a predatory lizard.
The first fragments of the skeleton of the animal was described in 2006, but due to the lack of fossils it belongs to the crocodiles remained questionable. The experts believed that the reptile is the carnivorous dinosaur. However, the new finding allowed the researchers to determine exactly who is the lizard.
R. sakalavae refers to notosuchian — the suborder of crocodylomorphs that lived during the Mesozoic era. These reptiles were adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle. Their feet are not located on the sides of the torso, as in modern lizards and crocodiles, and were straight, which allowed the animal to move quickly. The shape of the skull R. sakalavae resembled the VelociRaptor is a bipedal carnivorous dinosaur.
Scientists have discovered only part of the head of the ancient reptile, which, according to the results of the analysis of the remains has reached the size of a washing machine. The teeth were strong enough to crush bones.
