The office of Vkontakte is in a historic building — House singer, recognizable building with a dome.

The singer house, or “House of books” — a six-story loft building in art Nouveau style, with an area of about 7000 m2 was built in 1902-1904 by the architect Paul Suzor for “Joint-stock company singer in Russia.”
Initially the management of the company “singer”, producing sewing machines, wanted to build a skyscraper similar to what was built by company in new York city: high-rise building with many offices. However, such a project is not formally violating the Imperial decree limiting the height of residential private buildings in St. Petersburg (11 fathoms, that is, of 23.47 m), contradicted the St. Petersburg town-planning traditions.
The architect brilliantly solved this contradiction: on six floors with a loft he built a graceful tower, topped by a glass globe, whose diameter is 2.8 m. this soaring tower and creates the impression of altitude, but at the same time, thanks to its lightness, does not negate the domes of the Kazan Cathedral and the Savior on spilled blood, rising near Nevsky Prospekt.
Until 1917 the building belonged to the company “singer”; in the years 1904-1911 significant part of the building was leased by the St. Petersburg private commercial Bank. During the First world war, on the ground floor of the building was the U.S. Embassy.
Since November 2006 it re-operates the “House of books”. On the top three floors of the building company “singer” is the office of “Vkontakte”.
