Little known facts about the famous Sphinx. Photo

One of the most famous monuments.

The Egyptian Sphinx or Great Sphinx of Giza remains one of the most exciting mysteries of history. Archaeologists believe that it was built people, but when and who can not clearly answer so far.

Some believe that the Sphinx was a monument to the unknown Supreme deity. Others believe the statue was just another meaningless monument of the ancient pharaohs. Others believe that it was not without the intervention of aliens — as they say, otherwise, to explain this monumental construction? But really, riddles of the Sphinx full!

Phenomenon from the abyss

Strange, but archaeologists still can’t say exactly who ordered the construction of the Sphinx. It is believed that the monument was built during the reign of khafra, that is, of the fourth dynasty of the Old Kingdom in 2500 BC, however, some signs suggest that the monument is older and this age.

The unfinished masterpiece

But whoever started this build, to finish the plan he did not. The American archaeologist, mark Lener, found a nearby hidden cave where he kept the large rocks and construction tools. Apparently, the Sphinx was supposed to be the Central figure of a huge sculptural paintings.

Professionals at work

Slaves did not build the Sphinx, as many believe. According to recent studies, the builders lived in affluence and luxury, could afford very expensive while meat and even had its own brothel.

Good brother

Do not confuse the Greek and Egyptian sphinxes. In Greek mythology, the Sphinx forced travelers to solve the riddle and killed those who could not cope. And the Egyptian Sphinx creating much more good-natured, bestowing strength and courage to his faithful admirers.

Implanted beard

The Sphinx once had a beard, it’s a fact. Yes there is a piece of her and now kept in the British Museum. However, some experts believe that the beard was not an original part of the monument, but was added later. Most likely, it was ordered to add to the statue of Thutmose IV during the reconstruction.

This is not a Sphinx

And finally, technically the Egyptian Sphinx does not the Sphinx. Sphinx is a winged monster of Thebes, having a woman’s head and lion’s body. From the Egyptian Sphinx has no wings, nor a woman’s head — he’s quite clearly male. Who is it? But it is not clear.

Astronomical Sphinx

American archaeologist mark Lener believes that the Egyptian Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza were built by fans of the solar cult, trying thus to obtain energy. Modern astronomers such statements just twist his finger to his temple, but can not clearly answer how the ancient Egyptians managed to place the Sphinx in the ordered system with the pyramids of Giza, the Nile valley, the constellations of Leo and Orion. And how the Egyptians managed to align the monument is exactly in the center of the milky way is not quite clear.

Colorized cat

Now it’s hard to believe, but originally the Sphinx was colored. Near the still visible tiny drops of paint red color on the face and body stains blue and yellow. Experts assume that the original image was conceived just the same in bright colours.

The Sphinx and its missing nose

Common information that the nose of the Sphinx blew up Napoleon nothing more than a legend. According to historical documents, liability for damage to the great statue bears a pious Muslim Sufi Muhammad Saim al-Dah: so he tried to reduce the religious significance of the Sphinx.

Syncophonic

According to legend, the Pharaoh Thutmose fell asleep in the paws of the Sphinx and experienced a religious revelation. Since then, the statue has become an object of worship that is alive today. Of course, admirers of the monument not so much, but they are.

The large rock monument

It’s amazing how the ancient Egyptians managed to build this unique monument. Massive, tall figure of the Sphinx is officially the largest statue in the world.

Different names

Over its long history, the monument was replaced by a lot of names. Around 1400 BC the statue called the “Monument to the great Khepri”. Then came the nickname “Grief-Akhet”, and the Egyptians call it “balhib” or “bilhaw”.

The battle with the desert

Since the construction of the Sphinx was sinking in the sand. The desert tried to swallow the great statue and people had to work hard to win her place under the sun.
