In Moscow unpleasantly surprised.
The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that it was unpleasantly surprised by the information about the detention in Austria suspected of espionage in favor of Russia. He said this on Friday, November 9 at a briefing after talks with counterpart from the Comoros.
“I just found out about it, before the meeting, and, frankly, I this information was unpleasantly surprised,” admitted Lavrov.
However, he regretted that the Austrian party in this situation has gone the way of so-called megaphone diplomacy, and did not request the relevant information from the Russian authorities.
“For centuries it was accepted that if in any country there are concerns, suspicions regarding the actions of another country’s involvement in someone to some processes, which are considered as threats for States, according to the norms of international communication, you should immediately seek clarification,” – said Lavrov.
According to him, the Russian side accused, demanding to publicly apologize for the question, “about which we know nothing”.
“Today we invite the Ambassador of the Austrian Republic to the Ministry of foreign Affairs and will attract his attention, and what methods you need to act if they have any questions to Russia,” he said.
We will remind, earlier it became known that Austria has detained a retired Colonel of the armed forces on suspicion of gathering intelligence for Moscow. According to media reports, a former officer, now retired, during his service in the Austrian army about 20 years engaged in espionage in favor of Russia.
Because of the scandal, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Austria Karin Kneissl has canceled a trip to Russia that was scheduled for 2-3 December. In turn, the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurtz has said that Vienna waits from Moscow of explanations in this case.
