The new Chairman of the Kola science center, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) became a deacon of the Russian Orthodox Church and a doctor of geological-mineralogical Sciences, Professor Sergey Krivovichev. This was reported on the website of the centre. 44-year-old deacon was the first since the 1917 revolution, the Orthodox clergyman, elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Sergey Krivovichev, in an interview with “Izvestia” said that to remove the priesthood is not going to.
“For ten years I never stopped to successfully pursue science and scientific-organizational work. All this time, I am chair of the Department of crystallography, St. Petersburg state University, and also worked in various positions, including President of the International mineralogical Association,” said the deacon.
According to Krivovicheva, under his leadership, the Kola science center will conduct basic and applied research in the interests of both the region and the whole Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
Sergey Krivovichev was born in a family of geologists and from childhood was fascinated by this science. Is the father of many children — he has four sons and three daughters.
In 1994 he graduated from the geological faculty of St. Petersburg state University. In 2001 defended there his doctoral thesis. 29 Dec 2015 became a Professor at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2005, the international mineralogical Association adopted in honor of Sergei Krivovichev the name of the new mineral — krivovichevit. Krivovichev deciphered the crystal structure of more than 120 minerals that led to the discovery of more than 80 mineral deposits of Russia.
Sergey Krivovichev has also, since 1995, has served in the Church of St. Panteleimon in St. Petersburg. In 2006 he was ordained as a deacon of the Russian Orthodox Church. In his words, “he that believeth scientist in a more meaningful way of looking at the world”. The author of the book “the Science of believers and belief of scientists…”
