The head of the foreign Ministry believes dual Russian-Ukrainian citizenship is unacceptable.
Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that Ukraine is overdue debate on the issue of dual citizenship.
“We all understand that in Ukraine tens or even hundreds of thousands of people have passports of neighbouring countries. And it’s not only ethnic Hungarians. I think we should hold a discussion about the state’s attitude towards this large group of compatriots”, – said Klimkin.
The foreign Minister is convinced that it is possible to find a solution that will not hurt people with dual citizenship, but rather frees them from having to hide it.
“Debate is not in order to worsen their position, or to stigmatize them as traitors, and in order to reasonably address the legal and not only the conflict,” – said Klimkin.
He stressed that in the conditions of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the issue of dual Russian-Ukrainian citizenship should be considered separately.
“I personally find it fundamentally unacceptable. In fact, the decision on a single citizenship in Ukraine, was once accepted primarily as a safeguard against the possible influence of Russia on the newly proclaimed independent Ukraine. Today, when Moscow is waging against us armed aggression, this motivation disappears if Ukraine will want to consider limited use of dual citizenship, this principle no longer should concern Russia,” Klimkin wrote.
