YES meeting on the theme “the Future generation of all”.
“Dream big. The bigger your dream, the more you will achieve”. A few years ago this was stated by President of Israel Shimon Peres in his speech at the Yalta European strategy summit. In the capital of Ukraine from 13 to 15 September will be held the traditional annual meeting of Yalta European strategy (YES). To discuss today’s problems and preparing for the upcoming critical change on the planet in Kyiv at a conference organized by the international YES forum in partnership with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, will come around 400 leading politicians, diplomats, businessmen, social activists and experts from 28 States.
This year the 15th anniversary meeting of YES on the theme “the Future generation of all”. And in 2004 in Yalta at the Livadia Palace in the European workshop “the New strategy for partnership”, initiated by Viktor Pinchuk, was attended by only about 30 domestic and foreign experts. They discussed prospects of Ukraine’s membership in the EU, and after the seminar, the audience decided to further promote the integration of our country by establishing an international public organization, which would have contributed to this. So the Yalta European seminar turned into Yalta European strategy. The composition of the Supervisory Board YES in addition to the initiator of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation have included the President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski, European Parliament President, Pat Cox, the Minister for foreign Affairs of Sweden Carl Bildt, head of the Munich conference on security Wolfgang Ischinger, Vice-President of Havas Group, Stefan Fuchs.
From year to year the representatives of world intellectual elite raised extremely important for Ukraine issues concerning its position in Europe and the world. And every year these issues became sharper and more global, and the representation of participants is more powerful. From 2004 to 2017 in the YES conference was attended by many heads of state and government, including the Prime Ministers of great Britain Tony Blair and David Cameron, the presidents of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Dalia Grybauskaite, Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien, U.S. President bill Clinton, Turkey – Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Estonia – Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Poland – Bronislaw Komorowski, Israel – Shimon Peres, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, us Secretary of state Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza rice, Deputy Secretary of state strobe Talbott. Among the speakers were the leaders of international organizations: the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Director General of the International atomic energy Agency Mohammed al-Baradei, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the managing Director of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the speaker of the house of representatives newt Gingrich, world Bank President James Wolfensohn, the Ministers of foreign Affairs of Sweden – Carl Bildt, Germany’s Joschka Fischer, Poland – Radoslaw Sikorski. Also in the YES conference was attended by the founder of the Virgin Group Richard Branson, the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, sir Elton John, writer and philosopher Bernard-Henri levy, Nobel prize winner Muhammad Yunus and many other domestic and foreign politicians, businessmen and thinkers.
2004. The venue of the first European workshop on the formation of a new partnership strategy between Ukraine and the EU was symbolic. In 1945, at the Livadia Palace in Yalta, the famous Crimean conference of the leaders of USSR, USA and great Britain where Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill as the leaders of the victorious powers in the Second world war essentially divided the world into spheres of influence. Nearly 60 years later in the same Palace, at the round table were about 30 supporters of a United Europe, part of which is Ukraine.
2005-2006. Every year the participants of the conference, the YES became more and more. The second meeting came almost 70 delegates, in 2006, go-do – 120. And the result of the work of the third summit was a report, which sounded possible date of Ukraine’s accession to the EU is 2020.
2007. The forum in Yalta, then an aspiring politician Vitali Klitschko stated: “We need to learn to hold the results of our victories”. The former head of the national security Council of Poland Marek Sivets has agreed. And former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder admitted: “Ukraine’s Accession to the EU is only a matter of time.” But then, apparently in accordance with his then co-Chairman of the Russian-German gas consortium, said: “you Must close the Ukrainian-Russian cooperation. Because it affects the stability of energy supplies to Europe.”
2008. As a special guest at the fifth summit of YES was attended by former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Before the speech, the politician walked through the corridors of the Livadia Palace, hung with historic photos of the participants of the Crimean conference in 1945. During his speech, Blair said: “I am an optimist. As someone who has worked ten years as Prime Minister, should be optimistic. But for the EU membership, Ukraine will need to compete”.
2009. In the midst of the global financial crisis, the participants of the meeting in Yalta discussed including ways to overcoming. Participated in it, and the President of Ukraine (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma, President of Ukraine (1994-2004) Alexander Kwasniewski and Russian Ambassador to Ukraine (2001-2009), Viktor Chernomyrdin. He voiced his vision: “to emerge from the crisis, we rolled up his sleeves. You, too, have stepped up to the plate, but it is not clear that it is not clear where.” Viktor Chernomyrdin was one of the few Russian politicians believe that Ukraine will become an EU member.

His inspiring speech has remained in the memory of those fortunate to hear the great philosopher and politician. Perez advised the Ukrainians not to waste time on pessimism and not delve into the past: “In the past there is no future, no hope… Dream big. The bigger your dream, the more you will achieve… Consider in mind your achievements and dreams. If your dreams are more than achievements, so you are still young. If on the contrary – you are old”.
2012. Petro Poroshenko, the billionaire, philanthropist, founder and Chairman of Virgin Group Richard Branson, turning down at the head of the notions business. “I think – said in Yalta Branson – the majority of people who create new companies and start the business, I don’t think they earn a lot of money. Because their main task is to do something better, to change something for the better and then make money from it…”
Former Chairman of the Board of Directors of CNN Walter Isaacson in 2012, presented in Yalta, his book about Steve Jobs, based on around forty interviews with the legendary founder of Apple.
2013. Ahead of the Vilnius summit Ukraine-EU, which was planned signing of the Association Agreement, Aleksander Kwasniewski said, “Now the motto of the Ukraine should be a quote from the movie about the Second world war: “not one step back! Nowhere to retreat – Moscow is behind us”. And U.S. Secretary of state Hillary Clinton said in Yalta: “We have no voice in the EU, but we hope and welcome the integration of Ukraine in the EU”… Alas, in that year began the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, which escalated into a war.
2014. Because of Russia’s annexation of Crimea the first annual meeting of the Yalta European strategy took place in the Crimea, and in Kiev – in the Museum complex “mystetskyi Arsenal”. The participants discussed the question of how to prevent a new world war. The President of Ukraine (1991-1994) Leonid Kravchuk and ex-head of NATO, Javier Solana. After the invasion of Russian troops in the Donbass and made in the forum statements about what global security actually no, the UN and the OSCE is not capable to resolve conflicts, the former head of the Alliance said: “Yes, organizations are imperfect, but they work. Remember, the negotiations with Iraq went ten years…”
The founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales was brought to Kiev award for outstanding vklad of the development of the electronic encyclopedia of Ukrainian Igor Kostenko. “Wikipedian of the year” Igor was posthumously: February 20, 2014, he died on the Maidan. The diploma from the hands of Wales was received by the sister of the hero of the Heavenly hundreds.
2015. During a special teleconference with the participants of the summit President of the Trump Organization Donald trump said, “I’m very worried about Ukraine and what is happening there. I think that people from different parts of the world have to help her. I don’t think Ukraine is given due respect… I don’t think you get proper support. US supports Ukraine more in words than in reality…”
“To be tolerant and to accept people for who they are, not only right from a moral point of view, but reasonable for a new Ukraine. Ensuring fairness is an investment in human capital, that is the driving force of business,” – said during his speech at the 12th annual meeting sir Elton John.
“The Prosecutor General is active in the fight against corruption, but the success of this struggle depends on the courts,” – said the Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko. 2017. U.S. Secretary of state John Kerry at the summit stated that Western diplomacy has failed to predict the behavior of Russia, occupied after the overthrow of Yanukovych part of the territory of Ukraine. In this case, Kerry called another mistake partners Kiev: “I haven’t said this before, but I will say now. Channel process (to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia) were very stretched. The last four years, one of the main themes of the YES summits is the war in Donbas and the occupation of the Crimea by Russia. A year ago the Prime Minister of great Britain (2010-2016) David Cameron has admitted that the West was not ready for Russian aggression against Ukraine. He added: “That nothing can justify”.
