Kazakhstan has launched the fifth round of talks on Syria

“Delegations of the countries-guarantors of a ceasefire in Syria – Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as the UN, the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition held bilateral and trilateral technical meeting”, – stated in the message.

The Turkish delegation at the talks is headed by Deputy foreign Minister Advisor Sedat Onal, Russian special presidential envoy on the Syrian settlement, Alexander Lavrentiev, the Iranian Deputy foreign Minister Hussain Ansari.

According to sources, the main topics of the meetings in Astana, the negotiation of borders of zones of de-escalation and definition of security zones that will be created along the Syrian border. According to the Memorandum, along the borders of the zones of de-escalation should be established checkpoints and observation points.

Also on the agenda of the meetings was agreement in the working group on the exchange of prisoners, demining cultural facilities and the establishment of a Committee for national reconciliation.

The sides also touched upon issues of ensuring unhindered humanitarian access and reconstruction of infrastructure facilities in Syria.

As noted, July 5, the two sides will continue talks, which adopted a final decision on the issues on the agenda. The talks will be held under the chairmanship of foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov.

The negotiations between representatives of the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition in Astana from 23 to 25 January at the initiative of Turkey and Russia.

Following the talks, Turkey, Russia and Iran made the decision on the establishment of a tripartite mechanism for monitoring the truce in Syria.

The negotiators expressed their commitment to the territorial integrity, unity, independence and sovereignty of Syria.

Previous high-level meeting on Syria in the framework of the Astana process was held may 3-4, 2017 the capital of Kazakhstan.

The main outcome of the meeting was the signing by the guarantor countries of the Memorandum on the establishment of a de-escalation in Syria aimed at stopping the violence, preserving the unity and territorial integrity of this country and the political settlement of the conflict.
