Firefighters are trying to prevent the spread of fire, but to extinguish the flame fails.
Italy woke up the Vesuvius volcano. In Naples, which is located in the direct vicinity of the volcano, is a large-scale evacuation. The residents of five urban areas, and tourists had to flee.
Vesuvius threw into the sky a column of smoke and hot ash and lit the forest on its slopes.
Firefighters are trying to prevent the spread of fire, but to extinguish the flames they have not obtained: grass and dead trees continues to set fire to the volcano.
Meanwhile, as writes Corriere della Sera, the authorities do not exclude that the cause of forest fires may be arson. So, in 2016, 200 ha of forest burned on the slopes “without the intervention of a volcano.”
The climb to Vesuvius is a popular tourist route to the level 1000 metres above sea level, taking the bus, then about 200 meters we should walk. The crater itself is not anything interesting, but the summit offers stunning views of Naples and the Bay.
In 79 ad the eruption of Vesuvius led to the destruction of the three cities — Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. The harbinger of the eruption was the strongest earthquake described in the “Annals” of Tacitus and the “Letters” of Pliny the younger. Pompeii, as you know, is now a Museum under the open sky.
