The Iraqi army attacked the positions of Islamists from several directions, using artillery and aviation.
Thursday, February 23, Iraqi security forces launched a major offensive on the airport in Mosul and camp al-Ghazlani to the South-West of Mosul.
Federal police units and rapid reaction forces with air support and heavy artillery come into the airport from several directions for further assault.
During a large-scale offensive destroyed most of the defensive fortifications militants of the Islamic state.
The operation to liberate Mosul runs from 17 October 2016. The battle for the city is the largest military operation in Iraq since the us military in 2011.
