Almost all detention centres in Ukraine do not meet the standards.
In Ukraine almost all remand prisons (detention center) do not meet the standards of the European Union. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of justice Vadym Chernyshov.
According to him, “almost all detention centres in Ukraine do not meet the standards that exist in Europe.” The Deputy Minister noted that the Ukrainian prison filled to 95%.
“We need to build new remand centres, believe in the Ministry of justice, and even proposed a public-private partnership: the investor can obtain land and old building in the city in their use if we build elsewhere a new building for the prison to international standards,” he said.
However, Blackburn noted that there were no volunteers.
“If we talk about the plot Lukyanovsky jail, about 3.6 hectares, and there are several areas on which we could move this building. But the investor expects profit. We had 10 talks with various investors who were interested in, but not submitted their proposals. According to their calculations, they didn’t yield from the implementation of these projects,” he said.
