The mayor of the Turkish city Karamyursel jumped into the water during the port’s official ceremony of remembrance of the victims of the ferry crash to rescue an unconscious diver.
Ishmael Ildirim, which manages the city municipality, located on the shores of Izmit Gulf in Kocaeli, personally attended the ceremony, which was dedicated to 272 victims of the crash in local waters ferry in March 1958.
During the ceremony, two divers had to keep on the water a wreath in memory of the victims of the tragedy. Suddenly a female scuba diver lost consciousness underwater. The mayor said this is the first and, without wasting a second, threw shoes and jacket and lowered into the water.
He managed to quickly reach the woman and tow her to shore, where others helped them to rise to the top. The actions of the mayor, who himself is an experienced diver, was greeted by the applause of the ceremony participants, many of whom filmed the events on their smartphones.
