The Pentagon predicts a quick “cleaning” of Iraq and Syria from ISIS
Minister of defense James Mattis expressed the belief that after the liberation of key towns in Iraq and Syria from the influence of the terrorist group “Islamic state”, the progress of the liberation of the rest of the territory will be soon.
He stated this on Thursday during a meeting of defense Ministers of NATO countries in Brussels.
“Mosul, tal afar, and Hawija was released. Efforts for the final liberation of the territories who abstain ISIS in the province of Anbar have rapid progress,” – said the head of the defence Department of the USA.
He confirmed that as of now 95% of the territory in Syria and Iraq controlled by ISIS, freed from terrorist hotbeds. At the same time, partners of the international coalition on the ground continue to increase defense capabilities.
In this regard, Mattis noted the unprecedentedly high level of cooperation of the international coalition with Arab, Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite forces in Iraq under Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
At the same time, the head of the Pentagon has noticed that a Kurdish referendum on independence in the region, which was held in October, has created a certain tension. But the coalition, he said, is on the way to solving the problem in the constitutional order.
