Scientists announced an unusual discovery in the Odessa region. According to them, on territory of National natural Park “Tuzlovsky limans” managed to detect the remains of a prehistoric animal, probably a mammoth or a mastodon. The Park staff say they will send the bones for examination, and if their assumptions are confirmed, can be arranged in the protected area of excavation. Journalists found out the details about the unusual discovery.
According to the Director of NPP “Tuzlovsky limans” Ivan Ruseva originally the Park staff was looking for in his sea part of the unique shellfish called “angel Wings” which helps to determine the degree of pollution of seawater. “One of the staff walked along the shore along the slopes and from a distance saw protruding from the clay cliffs subject. It turned out to be the protruding bone of an animal,” he told us Rusev and added that the remains were found at a height of five meters above sea level, and above them towered the eight-metre layer of clay. Therefore, the scientists are sure nobody could drop them off. “We believe that the animal died here, and over time it was covered with soil,” he told us Rusev.
In total, the Park found five fragments of the skeleton. They suggest that the found remains belonged to a mammoth or mastodon, as in the modern world there are no animals with bones this size. “The largest of them, perhaps this is part of the pelvis the size of a newborn Piglet,” he explained to us Rusev.
The finds were sent to museums of Odessa for examination. If the experts confirm the assumptions of Park staff, the reserve will start excavations to find new fragments. By the way, the Park said that they still have a lot of slopes, where you can find the remains of prehistoric animals.

Colleagues researchers believe that the study of the remains need to start with excavation, so as to determine the animal to which they belonged, found parts of a skeleton may not be enough. “Judging by the photos, this tubular bones of the limbs — it is impossible to identify the animal. This analysis is done only in the teeth, or vertebrae,” he explained to us Geolog Dmitry Zhdanov.

Nevertheless, the scientist believes that to continue the search on this site is because quite possibly there are other snippets that will help you figure out the details. But before starting work, will have to settle a few important issues. “You don’t just start digging. Need to get a permit, which are issued only in the paleontological Institute in Kiev. In addition, you should find experts who’ll do that, because they are not very much in the country”, — considers Zhdanov, adding that the necessary equipment and financing, and public museums such money do not have.
WILL OPEN A MUSEUM IN THE NATURE RESERVE
The staff of the National natural Park “Tuzlovsky limans” are working to attract more tourists. Recently the Director of the reserve said that the Park plans to open a Museum of salt. According to him, the industry for the extraction of salt was actively developing in our region after the Russian-Turkish war in the early nineteenth century. On-site natural areas are still the remains of technical facilities for the extraction of this mineral.
