An unusually large volume of ice forced the penguins to swim farther for food than usual, the report said.
Activists of environmental organizations urged to take immediate action for the protection of the colony, which has 36 000 individuals. According to the world wildlife Fund, survival for many Antarctic species, including penguins, could contribute to a ban on krill harvesting in the area.
The problem with the penguins will discuss on Monday at a meeting of the Commission for the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources. Its membership comprises 25 countries and the EU.
As previously reported, in Yavoriv district of Lviv region opened a bear shelter “Domazhyr”.
