More than six thousand people gathered in the center of Ternopil in the crowded procession. Traffic in the city centre was blocked for a few hours.
People take turns carrying a large wooden cross weighing 80 kilograms. Thus, the Greek Catholics symbolically took the suffering of Jesus Christ on the way to Calvary. The procession is a traditional event for the Greek-Catholics during lent. The participants also jointly prayed for peace in Ukraine.
According to the priest Vitaly Kozak, a lot of people join the procession of the cross because they want a deeper experience the season of lent.
