LIH before the arrival of Russian troops took control of most of the Syrian territory
Russia saw the threat from the militants of the “Islamic state” for its territory from Syria, so it was decided to send troops there. This was stated by the head of the Main operations Directorate of the General staff of armed forces Colonel-General Sergey rudskoy.
According to him, ISIS threatened to invade Russian territory.
“The development of the situation in such a scenario threatened the security of Russia, since the vector of further movement of ISIL in Central Asia and the Russian Caucasus and the Volga region was marked clearly enough,” said rudskoy.
He notes that at the time of the invasion of Russian troops, the militants outnumbered the government forces of Syria.
“The Syrian government single-handedly led the fighting against terrorism on its territory, and detachments of the so-called “moderate opposition” in fact merged with ISIS and “dzhebhat an-Nusra”, which had more generous financing, supplies of arms and ammunition from their foreign sponsors,” the military said.
He also noted that the terrorists controlled more than 70% of the country and continued to advance on all fronts.
