In Romania again erupted into massive anti-corruption protests

New anti-corruption protest in Romania has gathered about 10 thousand demonstrators.

Thousands of residents of Romania on Sunday evening, March 5, took to anti-corruption demonstrations. They again accused the ruling Social democratic party in obstructing the fight against corruption. In Bucharest, according to media reports, about 10,000 people marched from the building of the Cabinet of Ministers to the constitutional court and the anti-corruption Committee of the Prosecutor’s office. Protests on a smaller scale were also held in other cities of the country.

The demonstrators expressed solidarity with the anti-corruption Committee and demanded the de-politicization of the constitutional court. As reported by AP, the marchers in Bucharest blew whistles and vuvuzelas, waving flags of Romania and USA and chanted “Romania, Wake up!” and “We want justice, not corruption!”

According to the Agency dpa, the constitutional court criticized the anti-corruption Committee for investigation against the Ministry of justice, in which they were searched and questioned. Government critics also praised the actions of the anti-corruption Committee as excessive.

The first demonstrations in Romania were held in early February and continued for several weeks. They were the largest in the country since the revolution of 1989. Initially, the protests were provoked by the bill against corrupt officials who caused damage to the state amounting to less than 44 thousand euros, was not to start a criminal case. The Romanian government also intended to Amnesty prisoners sentenced for up to 5 years on corruption charges. In early February it became known about the abolition of the controversial decree. Despite this, the opposition tried to make the government a vote of confidence, however, are unable to enlist the support of a sufficient number of deputies.
