At the Riga airport there was a loud incident that caused a diplomatic row between Latvia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
When to Riga there has arrived the new Ambassador of the UAE, Hanan Khalfan of Obaydi Ali al-Madani, the staff demanded that she took a traditional Muslim clothes and hijab. The Ambassador said that can not do in a public place.
The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Latvia has already received a sharp note of protest over disrespect for Muslim traditions and diplomatic immunity in respect of the new Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates.
The note reads, inter alia, that airport staff made offensive comments.
“The Ambassador has indicated that it may do so only in the presence of women without “prying eyes”. Airport staff not only presented such possibility, but also made offensive comments”, – stated in the document.
The UAE Embassy in Latvia was opened on 9 February. Foreign Minister Edgars rinkēvičs noted that it will facilitate political and economic cooperation among States as well as to attract investment.
